Guy de Maupassant is one of the most talented short storytellers. This popular 19th century French writer is very rightly given the credit of being the father of the modern short story. He is said to fine-tune the medium to a large extent. Guided by French novelist Gustave Flaubert himself, Maupassant too had romance and realism in equal measure. Maupassant's works of fiction are characterized by minimalistic style devices yet efficient, effortless writing style. Several stories are set during the Franco-Prussian War (1870s) and describe the futility of war. He was a prolific writer unlike Flaubert and authored 300 short stories, six novels and three travelogues.

The story "Boule de Suif" (Ball of Fat is considered his best. Also, his horror story, "Le Horla" that discusses madness and suicide is well-read. Maupassant is remembered for his clever plotting. He is said to have served as a model for Somerset Maugham and O Henry. His stories about expensive jewelry (The Necklace) are imitated with similar twists by Maugham (A String of Beads). Maupassant comfortably switched between realist and fantastic modes. He described the supernatural and the mundane equally well. The supernatural in Maupassant, however, is often implicitly a symptom of the protagonists' troubled minds; Maupassant was fascinated by the burgeoning discipline of psychiatry. This interest is reflected in his fiction. Among Maupassant's best known books is Une Vie (A Woman's Life), that talks about the frustrating existence of a Norman wife Bel-Ami. Then there was Pierre et Jean that is said to be a psychological study of two brothers. However, the novel was thought to be immoral, according to the classic definition of heroism, because in the story the hero succeeded by doing wrong.

Maupassant himself had suffered from syphilis and hence neurological and mental problems were a recurring them in his works. In fact, the theme of mental illness is present in his first collection, La Maison Tellier. In his story A Queer Night in Paris the narrator feels compelled to walk the Custom Boxed Corporate Gift Diary Suppliers streets. In Who Knows? the protagonist suffers from delusions about the furniture he owns in his house. In the work Diary of a Madman, the judge, himself commits a murder only for experiencing it for himself and later punishes an innocent man to death for the crime. Maupassant's writing is also compared with that of Edgar Allen Poe. Maupassant's horror writings comprise of 39 stories, which is only 1/10th of his actual writing!
