This interest is reflected in his fiction. Among Maupassant's best known books is Une Vie (A Woman's Life), that talks about the frustrating existence of a Norman wife Bel-Ami. Then there was Pierre et Jean that is said to be a psychological study of two brothers. However, the novel was thought to be immoral, according to the classic definition of heroism, because in the story the hero succeeded by doing wrong.

Maupassant himself had suffered from syphilis and hence neurological and mental problems were a recurring them in his works.
